Study Smarter, Not Harder: 3 Proven Tips for Effective Learning

We constantly search for ways to help our students learn better and help ourselves as we study, too, to gain new skills to keep up with the profession. The video (Ted-Ed, 2023) I came across recently describes three easy tips to enhance learning.

The first tip is to test yourself using flashcards and quizzes. It helps actively retrieve knowledge and strengthen and update memory. This method provides a more accurate assessment of what is known compared to passive techniques like rereading or highlighting.

The second is to study multiple subjects or topics in a single session rather than focusing on one at a time. It improves retention by forcing the brain to forget and retrieve information, strengthening memory connections, and aiding in differentiating concepts.

And the last one is spreading study sessions over multiple days rather than cramming. It allows the brain to consolidate and integrate knowledge during rest and sleep, leading to better long-term retention.

The whole video with additional comments and arguments is here:

The tips look easy to implement and are worth trying and given to students before class assignments.
